Directions

  1. Explain that this strategy helps readers interact with the text.
  2. Choose 2–3 codes that support the purpose of the reading and reinforce targeted standards and objectives.
  3. Model the strategy using an overhead or whiteboard. Do a Think-Aloud while marking the codes so students witness the metacognitive process.
  4. Guide the students in applying the coding strategy. Review the codes and have students code their reactions as they read on the page margins, lined paper inserts, or sticky notes.

Content Integration: Have students read excerpts from “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights” and code for:

  • I-the role of the individual
  • G-the role of the government
  • N-neither

When students are finished text coding, discuss the mission and role of the United Nations.

SS.912.A.1.1 Describe the importance of historiography, which includes how historical knowledge is obtained and transmitted, when interpreting events in history.

  1. Provide students with a topic (or essential question) and documents that relate to the topic.
  2. Students will record differing evidence in each of the non-connected sections of the venn diagram and concurring evidence in the middle or overlapping sections of the diagram.

Content Specific Task:

Present students with the question, “Why was the American Civil War fought?” Be sure to include related documents with diverse perspectives for students. Students will record common causes for the Civil War in the Similarities section and the Union and Confederate point of views in the Differences sections.
