AP Strategies for Non-AP Teachers

Increased demands of the Language Arts Florida Standards (LAFS) and the need to better prepare students for college and career readiness necessitates that teachers employ strategies that traditionally have been reserved for the Advanced Placement (AP) arena. This professional development familiarizes non-AP teachers with a variety of approaches to engage students with multiple complex texts, synthesize the information gathered, and write analytically in response to these texts. A variety of strategies and methods for achieving these goals will be shared, including avenues for differentiation. Participants will be exposed to a variety of text and non-text formats to effectively implement these modalities with students of all achievement levels.

Socratic Seminar

Socratic seminars place ownership for learning on students. Teachers in this professional development will learn how to facilitate Socratic Seminars that provide the forum for students to create and ask their peers questions centered on complex text. Student engagement in speaking and listening strategies through Socratic Seminars allows them to engage in accountable talk, demonstrate their understanding of text, and apply LAFS standards.

Strategies for Reading Informational Texts

This highly engaging and interactive workshop will show teachers how to incorporate research-based fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary strategies into their literacy and content-area classrooms. Teachers will learn appropriate pre-reading activities to ensure their students succeed in their first reading of the text. Participants will also learn activities that require students to reread a text multiple times while employing different literacy strategies.

Flipping the Literacy Classroom

With the increased use and improvement of technology, teachers can now ask students to read and engage in text and multimedia information at home, so that class time can be used more effectively for project-based learning and differentiated instruction. The Flipped Classroom allows the teacher more instructional time to determine students’ understanding of the text, and to fully engage students in class discussions, and speaking and listening tasks. Participants in this professional learning will gain hands-on knowledge of tools and strategies for the implementation of a flipped classroom model.

Citing Textual Evidence

In this professional development, teachers gain instructional strategies to engage students in complex, informational and argumentative texts and in the decisive manner in which they must utilize that those texts as citations for their writing. Reading comprehension strategies geared to a variety of multi-genre texts will be provided, as well as ways that students can show in writing, or through other tasks, comprehension of these texts.
